Is Your HEPA Filter Enough?

HEPA is just the beginning. Find out why.

Is Your HEPA Filter Enough?

HEPA filters have long been considered the gold standard in air purification. Recommended by doctors and trusted by hospitals, airplanes, and homes alike, HEPA filters are proven to capture 99.97% of airborne particles as small as 0.3 microns—including dust, pollen, mold spores, bacteria, viruses, and other allergens.

If you already have a purifier with a HEPA filter, youre doing the right thing. Youve taken a critical first step toward protecting your indoor air.

But heres what many people dont realize: HEPA is just the beginning.

While HEPA filters are essential for trapping particles, they do little to remove ultrafine particles and other harmful toxins like volatile organic compounds (VOCs), toxic fumes. Ultrafine particles, pollutants smaller than 0.3 microns, are often linked to headaches, respiratory issues, hormone disruption, and even long-term illness.

In this article, well explain how HEPA filters work, why theyre essential, and what additional features you should look for in an air purifier to ensure optimal protection for your health.

HEPA Filters: What They Are, Where They Came From, and Why They Matter

HEPA filters have a more dramatic origin than most people realize. During World War II, a soldier found a piece of paper inside a German gas mask that was surprisingly good at trapping chemical smoke.

That discovery caught the attention of scientists working on the atomic bomb, who faced a new challenge: radioactive particles, around 0.3 microns in size, were slipping right through the filters used up to that point. That led to the first High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter, designed specifically to protect against those toxic radioactive particles. The name “HEPA” came later, but the technology stuck, earning its reputation as a trusted line of defense.

Today, HEPA filters are still common, but theyre not a complete solution.

Why Standard HEPA Filters are Not Enough

While standard HEPA filters do a good job trapping dust and many allergens, they fall short when it comes to other dangerous impurities in the air. Many harmful pollutants are either too small or simply not the kind standard HEPA filters are designed to catch.

In addition to ultra-fine particles, other toxic contaminants can still pass through, including:

  • Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs): These invisible gases come from furniture, carpets, paint, air fresheners, and cleaning supplies. Theyre linked to headaches, dizziness, fatigue, nausea1, and even mental health issues2. Standard HEPA filters dont stop VOCs, which pass straight through.
  • Gaseous Pollutants: Gases like nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ozone (O3), sulfur dioxide (SO2) and carbon monoxide (CO) come from traffic, factories, and wildfire smoke. Theyre some of the most toxic pollutants indoors and easily slip through HEPA filters because theyre gases, not particles.
  • Additional Contaminants: Beyond those listed above, other harmful substances can also escape standard HEPA filters, including viruses and bacteria, chemicals, formaldehyde, ammonia, and chlorine.

Incomplete Air Filtration Comes at a High Cost

When ultrafine particles (UFPs) and PM2.5 slip past standard HEPA filters, they enter the bloodstream, and ultimately reach the brain, where they can do serious damage. Studies have linked these particles to memory loss in children3 and dementia in adults4.

Even more concerning, long-term exposure to VOCs and UFPs has also been shown to slow learning and increase behavioral issues in children5. Thats no small thing – especially when kids spend a majority of their time indoors where air pollution can be 2–5, and sometimes 100 times worse than outside6.

So, while an air purifier with a HEPA standard filter might be running in the background, that doesnt mean the room is truly clean, or your family is fully protected.
